Skydive Chicago Hosts US Nationals

OmniSkore! coverage of the 2007 US Nationals.
Omnibits by Jan Meyer

Sept. 12 at 5 am
I got this comment from Jens on Team Motus-8 (704):
Are those hair styles of the S&A women wind rated (like windsocks)?
Since the weather is MUCH better today, I think I can take new pictures today. The weather is crisp and clear. Blue Skies for today, albeit cooler than normal for this time of year.

6 am
Apparently, the power went out at some parts of the hotel. One place happens to be Tim's room. So he's going to be late today. This brought up the age-old disscussion about how to make sure you get woken up at the proper time. I use at least two battery-powered alarm clocks plus the hotel wake-up call. Sometimes I even bring another wind-up clock too. Triple or quadruple redundancy helps me sleep better.

7:30 am
Accuracy is on for this morning.

Charlie, Barry and MaryLou geared up to do the wind-dummy load.

Look at this waaaaay cool safety placard on the otter stairs.

Our illustrious Meet Director wearing his snowboard hat.

8:30 am
Carolina Black Ice takes a one point lead over SPX8 after round 6.

Line at the fuel pumps earlier today.

9:30 am
WOW - wee!!!! There were 14 dead centers in round 1 of Accuracy. We have the email transfer working for Accuracy scores. I am waiting for the judges to verify the data before posting it. They have to compare hand-written to the computer.

10:15 am
The Accuracy Scores are now up. Carolina Black Ice has gained another point to it lead over SPX8. SPX8 has to make up two points in the remaining 3 rounds.
Airspeed posted an 18 in round 7 to Knight Trax 17.

High Noon
Carolina Black Ice busted an inter and then built the end of the block incorrectly. They got busted down to a 2 for round 8. Meanwhile, SPX8 posted a 6 for round 8. The lead changes. Tim will have more details, as he was on the panel that judged that dive. They had to get out the rule book to determine if the there were one or two separate penalties.
Round 2 of Accuracy is up now. Note to Bob at Skydive Rick's. I'll be emailing you the scores after each round.
Earlier this week I finally got to met the famous Billy Beaudreau from CPI. For those of you who do not subscribe to the CPI mail-list, Billy is the way cool poster, motivator and generally all around funny guy on the list.

Dennis Murphy headed for a dead center.

1:30 pm
Accuracy is finishing up the 6th round. They will then switch over to style for the rest of the day.
8-way is finishing round 10.
The judges are scoring everything. The collating the Accuracy is doing is taking a long time.

2 pm
Rule 303 withdrew from 8-way to go practice 16-way. They had a noon cutoff and the weather delay yesterday pushed the competition into 16-way practice. Rule 303 was a pickup team.
SPX8 wins by one point over Carolina Black Ice. Perris Activ8 and Cross Keys TRF are tied for 3rd place.

2:30 pm
Perris-Keys: Cross Keys TFR and Perris Activ8 told me that they are going to do a 16-way instead of the jump-off round. Either that or a left coast vs right coast battle in the sky.

Meanwhile, out at the pit....

This is Deena Danner with her daughter, Jessica. Deena and her husband Gary are competing in 16-way. Gary and Deena were on a Skydance team called Focus Four a few years back. I was their first coach.

3:00 pm
Surprise, Surprise, Surprise... Airspeed wins 8-way open. Knight Trax comes in second and Ace 8 takes third. Great job by all.

5:00 pm
Round 1 of Style is up. Elisa Tennyson has a small lead over Cheryl Stearns. Jimmy Hayhurst has a one second lead over Stu Metcalf. Keith Bergeron is just behind Stu.
Rounds 1-6 of Accuracy is up too. Bill Wenger, Jimmy Hayhurst and Dennis Murphy lead the pack. Elisa Tennyson, Cheryl Stearns and Karen Morrison lead the pack.
If you make a combined standings list (that is not officially recognized) Elisa, Bill and Cheryl lead the pack. Did anyone expect anything different??
Check back later for round 2 in style results.
16-way draw, teams etc should be around 7:30 ish.

6:00 pm
Round 2 of Men's Style is posted. The women's round 2 will be finished off in about 40-50 minutes. Round 3 is being jumped now. We should be able to get some videos up, but not until tommorrow.

6:30 pm
Women's Style round 2 is now judged and posted on the web site. They are starting round 3. The auditorium is getting noisy with people filtering in for the 8-way awards.

8:30 pm
The 3rd round of Style is posted.
8-way awards were given out.
16way briefing was just finished. Draw to be posted asap.
Big kudoes to the Style judges that judged through the awards ceremony with all the noise. Hey, does this mean we don't have to whisper any more in the judges room???
Here is Perris Moxie's Round 9. Turns out those blocks are their most favorite blocks.

Sometime before midnight...
We went to a 'thing' at Shakers that was hosted by PD. Free food and free beer. Thanks PD.
Pics from the awards ceremony (the lighting on other photos was not good)

Intermediate Champions

Airspeed - who gave up their position to represent the US to Knight Trax. (Sorry the Knight Trax pics were too dark.) Apparently, this is a first of some sort. The GK and FastTrax agreed to train together and concentrate on 8-way. Airspeed will concentrate on 4-way. I do believe the US will be well represented.

Here is a pic of the guy doing the style photography at work with Chris Moore looking on and providing audio calls: "standby", "exit", plus any corrections that may be needed. That reminds me. Sometime today a CRW group was in the airspace used by the Style jumpers. The Caravan had to circle around for awhile, waiting for the CRW jumpers to clear the area. So any of you CRW, FS or AE jumpers out there practicing, please keep clear of the style and accuracy area. You hold up competition jumps and cost the DZ extra money when you make the Caravan circle around.

Thanks to Bill and Amy von Novack for the ride home.

Oh yeah, this email from Janet Kelly:
Hey Jan!
Just wanted to say Hey! And, let you know the Omniskore website looks fantastic and is working so well that we here (stuck at home in SoCal) are pleased to be getting such speedy updates. Keep up the great work!

PS: It was fun to see the tie for 3rd place in 8-way Intermediate!! And, yeah, so many of our buds there together in a tie.... It sure would be great to see a Left vs. Right Coast jump-off, but if you have 16 bronze medals for 8-way, I sure wouldn't mind seeing what they could do together in 16-way. Oh, heck, I was just kidding! They have plenty of time to band together for 16-way!!! Tell those pussies to get up there and duke it out and earn that bronze fair and square!!!!

PPS: Please tell Pam Riggs I'll call her back just as soon as I'm drunk again!!!

love you all!!!
dammit janet!!

BTW, that message left from my cell phone was really from Pammi. She said you would 'figger it out'. I would never say what she said. ;)
