Tim's Nationals After Action, uhm, Opinion

As I wait for the final scores to be posted, I offer my picks and pans for these Nationals. My dos pesos. Send me yours and I'll post them here.

OmniPicks:

  • The Conatsers & PVS. A job well done.

  • The daily breakfast/lunch/dinner buffet was for the most part excellent, except when it became tomorrow's leftovers.

  • Video Pool, RIP. Making the videographer the teams' responsibility was the single greatest leap forward in Nationals rules since they stopped using ground-to-air telemeters. Sure, Mock 5 got hosed by video - but now teams know the rules and they'll plan, and train, accordingly.

  • Freefly. 17 teams (51 competitors) for the first Nationals, and a terrific competition. I'm not ready to be a lawn dart myself, though. I've got a few points left in these bones!

  • The competitors. The best turnout in years, the best skydiving on the planet, and we had front-row seats. THANK YOU to everyone who trained hard or traveled far. We sure enjoyed watching the fruits of your labor.

  • George Bush. If you don't like him, fine. But the alternative is downright scary.

OmniPans:

  • Freestyle & Skysurf. There are not enough competitors to justify the expense of these events. Once again, there are more medals to be won than there are teams to win them. At the very least, eliminate the Intermediate classes.

  • Schedule of Events. The CF/FF/SK/FR events should precede FS for better logistical and press support. And the middle overlap on one weekend would make for one helluva party!

  • Guest Teams. All guest teams should be required to compete in the Open category. Guest teams finished in the top two points standings for 4-way Advanced (like last year) and the top point standing in 4-way Intermediate. Get them out of there and let the medal winners have their just glory.

  • The FS judging. Like Ted said: “Judging was only a little bit better than last year’s (Nationals). Only because it couldn’t be worse.” We need more money for the judges and a more competitive process to select them. There's no excuse for them to show up untrained and uncurrent on the dive pool.

  • Lack of live judging for the open FS classes. Let's do more to get Nationals hosts to make this happen!

  • Lousy DZTV viewing area. My only ding on PVS's otherwise excellent show. They put a big TV out on the deck by the creeping area during the day; it was hard to see. Yes, I'm spoiled by the Eloy experience.

Thank you all for stopping by, and see you next time!
